Welcome to Preschool

Our PUSD Preschool

PUSD Preschool offers preschool opportunities to 3 and *4 year-old children at 23 different school locations in the Poway Unified School District. Our programs focus on the academic and social-emotional needs of young children. We are a developmentally-based program that is guided by the California Preschool Learning Foundations and California Preschool Curriculum Frameworks which allows us to prepare children for entry into PUSD’s Transitional or Traditional Kindergarten classrooms. All classrooms use curriculum and learning materials that are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive to provide safe and nurturing learning environments for young children that promote their emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development. PUSD Preschool recognizes that parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. A child's learning experiences both at home and at school are the foundation for lifelong feelings of self worth, competence, and a love of learning. Parents are our essential partners in supporting a child's success in our preschool programs. Our classrooms have an "open door" policy to encourage families to be involved in their child's early education experiences.

*Children whose 5th birthday is between 9/2/2023 and 4/2/2024 are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), not preschool. Please see PUSD's TK Website for information on Transitional Kindergarten.

Tuition-Based Programs

Tuition-based programs offer classes in two environments:
Part-Day or Full-Day.

Part-Day 2 or 3-days a week classes are 3 hours long and are held 2 days per week for 3 year-olds or 3 days per week for 4 year-olds. Parents who commit to regular participation as a classroom volunteer may be eligible for reducted tuition rates.

IMPORTANT: We are offering a 5 days a week, 3.5 hours a day Spanish Immersion program at Valley Elementary school. This program will include 3 and 4 year old students.

Full-Day classrooms are open 7:30 to 5:30, Monday through Friday. Full-Day classes are licensed by the California Department of Social Services and operate under Community Care Licensing guidelines.

State-funded Programs

PUSD offers State Preschool in two environments: 3-hour or 6-hour programs. Both types of programs meet Monday through Friday and are subject to income eligibility.

The 6-hour program is operated in collaboration with the federal Head Start program. Families must meet federal income eligibility requirements to be considered for enrollment.

One free meal is included for all students in the 3-hour classes and 2 meals for the 6-hour classes.

All classes are licensed by the State Department of Social Services/ Community Care Licensing, and participate in the California Quality Rating and Improvement System (CA-QRIS). Our current QRIS Rating is at the highest levels in all classrooms.

PUSD’s State Preschool program is funded by the California Department of Education, which requires an annual evaluation of childcare and development services. PUSD uses evaluations tools to increase program quality standards and to plan and deliver developmentally appropriate activities, including Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP), Environment Rating Scale (ERS), and annual DRDP Parent Survey.

Diversity and Inclusion

Our Goal

Parents and Partners

PUSD Preschool values the diversity that exists amongst our staff, the children and families in our programs, in our community and across the world.

All PUSD Preschools provide safe and nurturing learning environments for young children that promote their emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development. We believe that parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. Our teachers and staff hold parents' insights and feedback on their children's needs in high regard and consider parents as essential partners in supporting a child's success in our preschool programs.
